As you may or may not know, Stephen A. Smith is a sports television personality on the show First Take in which he argues about what is happening in sports. This writer describes his personality and way of speech in such detail it is crazy. From the way his eyes get big when he is making a statement, to the shape of his head. It is so descriptive it almost seems creepy, it describes him like a good novelist would when introducing a new character. The writer uses quotes and even gives descriptions on how he pronounces things, for example, when he wants to put emphasis on something he puts breaks in between syllables like "re-dic-u-lous" and gets louder and louder the more passionate he is about a topic.
The writer does a good job of tying it all together. He adds Stephen A. Smith's input on why he acts the way he does on camera saying, "The job is to be enough of a personality that they want to know what you think". This pretty much sums up his behavior on set. He often looks at the cameramen and tells them he is about to say something important so they need to put the camera on him, then makes his statement. He uses vulgar language, yet speaks with authority and clarity with everything he says. Though most of his discussion is about sports, not politics, he has shared a few of his opinions about political activity, and people love it. They want to hear what he has to say about it, even though he is not an expert, they know who he is and wonder what he must think about things.
This mentor text is a great example of how to capture the true image of a person and describe them in a very extensive manner. The writer doesn't leave anything out and described things that I would have never thought to.
